Jean Nicolson wedding and events pianist Ayrshire

The following offers some guidelines, an indication of things to remember in music terms for the big day...

The music during the wedding ceremony itself is fairly complex and must be planned down to the letter.

There are many things going on behind the scenes as it were which you may not be aware of. Communication is the key.

For example:

How does the pianist know when to play the music for the entrance of the bride? Signals have to be arranged usually between the minister/registrar and pianist. Likewise, the cues for the music finishing for the register signing and exit music.

Does your ceremony have a religious context or is it completely secular?

Are the hymns (if any) in the right key for the guests? Many older, traditional hymns are set quite high and it’s a good idea for them to be played in a lower key, especially if the numbers of guests at the ceremony itself is quite small.

Some hymns have various tunes to which the words are sung. Do you know the tune you want?

If hymns are to be sung by the guests at the ceremony, please, please don’t use a CD. It causes all sorts of problems with starting off the song, pauses between verses, keeping everything together. A good live pianist is able to ‘modify’ to help the singing along.

You need a pianist who knows what they’re doing and arrives in plenty of time to set up these little corners of your wedding day.

If you are a hotel owner/manager or events organiser please check Jean’s availability. As a hospitality venue you may wish to offer potential customers the option of a pianist as part of a wedding package, dinner party or other function. Or you may require a pianist for your restaurant. Get in touch with Jean Nicolson to discuss.

After the wedding ceremony while photographs are taken, there may be a drinks reception as your guests look forward to the wedding meal.

Again, some live music during this time is a real bonus. Friends and family will no doubt be catching up with all the news. You want the atmosphere to be just right ...

... and piano is perfect, just heard above the chatter.

... or during the meal, when family and friends of the bride and groom may be meeting for the first time, a live pianist is a great conversation starter!
